A & K Woodgate are a small family business situated on the Norfolk and Suffolk boarders, specialising in the repair and conservation of historic listed buildings. We offer a personal service to all, and pride ourselves on producing a very high standard of work and finish, using traditional skills gained over more than 63 years in the construction heritage sector.
Established in 1970 by brothers Anthony & Ken Woodgate, the brothers was joined in 2000 by Ken’s youngest son Chris and in 2019 by Ken’s eldest grandson Joshua. Our families roots in construction go back to our great grandfather William, who founded the Gisleham Steam Brickworks in the early 1900’s. The company was still producing bricks and later land drainage pipes into the mid 20th century, our grandfather, another William, building the last kiln in 1954.
Specializing in the repair, conservation and maintenance of grade 1 & 2 listed buildings, the majority of our work centres on the historic church’s of Suffolk and Norfolk, many of which are the famous round tower church’s which are unique to the beautiful area in which we live. We have also been privileged to have worked upon some of East Anglia’s beautiful houses and ancient buildings. Including Broadland Wind Pumps, the famous ‘Scores’ cobble walls in Lowestoft’s historic north high street, the ‘Julian Church’ in Norwich. The restoration of the American 8th Army Air Force control tower at Seething Airfield, Norfolk, now a living memorial and museum to the personal of the 448th BG based at Seething during world war two, and the restoration of the Woodthorpe family box tombs (Lowestoft China fame)
Lime mortar pointing is a speciality which we are always being asked to carry out, using traditional methods. We can also carry out timber repairs and conservation, lime plastering, slate and tile roof work.
We have the Heritage Approved Contractor accreditation from The National Federation of Builders. Are corporate members of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. Members of the Building Limes Forum and are CITB registered.
Our insurance cover is comprehensive, enabling us to work on historic listed buildings including ecclesiastical buildings.
