Why Are These Courses Important?

Neurodiversity is the term used to describe the different ways in which people’s brains function, learn and process information, not better, not worse, simply different.  Understanding neurodiversity is crucial in creating a workplace where everyone can thrive.

This initiative represents a significant step towards a more inclusive and supportive construction industry and presents a substantial opportunity for the sector to lead the way in championing neurodiversity awareness and support.

Key Facts:

  • 1 in 4 people in the construction industry identify as having a neurodiverse condition.
  • 17% of these workers have a formal diagnosis.
  • 75% of workers said they weren’t asked about neurodiversity during hiring or onboarding, which could mean missed chances to offer support.

These were the findings from a survey commissioned by the National Federation of Builders in June 2023 involving over 1000 construction workers.

The report also highlighted challenges faced by neurodivergent workers, with 38% believing there is no or not much empathy for neurodiverse workers in the industry. These statistics emphasise the need for increased awareness and support.
